Adventure with the Deuter Kid Comfort Active: A Review
If you're a parent who loves the great outdoors and has a little one in tow, you’ll be on the hunt for a child backpack that works for you.
If there's one thing that makes my adventures even more magical, it's having Lily by my side experiencing them with me. Now Lily is 10 months old (and is getting bigger by the second!) it was time to move her out of her BabyBjorn Carrier into a more robust backpack carrier for our hikes.
Our latest adventure companion? The Deuter Kid Comfort Active, and let me tell you, it's been a game-changer. I was fortunate enough to have this product gifted to me by Little Trekkers and I have been putting it to the test over the last month.
In short, I love it. And here’s why …

My Thoughts…
TL;DR: The Deuter Kid Comfort Active, with its comfort, safety, and user-friendly features, is a great choice for outdoor adventures with your child - I certainly love it! Though it's worth noting that its storage capacity is somewhat limited.
Comfort at Its Core
The first thing that struck me about the Deuter Kid Comfort was the level of comfort it provides.
One issue I've encountered with some carriers is that they don't always fit comfortably, especially for shorter people like me (and my husband - Sorry Jonny!). The Deuter Kid Comfort Active, however, was a pleasant surprise. Both Jonny and I found it to be incredibly comfortable, and I could adjust it to fit my smaller frame without any trouble.
The padded shoulder straps and hip belt ensure that we can embark on longer hikes without discomfort, and Lily seemed perfectly content throughout our journeys.
Safety First
Lily's safety is always my top priority. The Deuter Kid Comfort Active comes equipped with a secure 5-point safety harness, making me feel completely at ease. Lily loves to test the security of the straps, by constantly trying to lean over to see if she’s missing out on anything - and I can feel at peace knowing she’s secure and safe up there!
This carrier is designed for children from 9kg up to 24kg - so suitable for children from about 9 months. The child should be able to sit upright independently.
Easy To Use
One of the standout features of the Deuter Kid Comfort is its user-friendliness - even for me, who tends to struggle with these things! Getting used to a new child carrier can be a bit daunting, but the Deuter Kid Comfort Active won me over with its user-friendly design.
The kickstand clicks into place easily, and the side-entry seat made getting Lily in and out a breeze. We did spend some time adjusting the straps before our first hike, but once we got the hang of it, it was smooth sailing.
Plus, the sunroof keeps them shaded on sunny days. This carrier is designed with both parent and child in mind, making it a win-win for all involved.
Lightweight Design
Despite its sturdy and durable build, the Deuter Kid Comfort is surprisingly lightweight.
I've tried a fair few child carriers, and this one is the lightest in Deuter's range. Carrying Lily and all the essentials for our hikes has never been this easy.
It's not difficult to carry, even with a child onboard. This is crucial for maintaining stamina and comfort during longer hikes or walks.
Storage and Convenience
The Deuter Kid Comfort doesn't just carry your child; it also offers ample storage space. The numerous pockets and compartments provide room for essentials like nappies, snacks (very important!), and extra layers of clothing.
With 14 liters of space, it's perfect for stashing essentials like snacks, water, extra layers, and baby supplies.
However, if you're planning a full day's adventure, you might want to bring an additional bag for all your gear.
Pros and Cons of The Deuter Kid Comfort Active
Pros:
Comfortable for Both Child and Parent: The Deuter Kid Comfort Active is designed with padded shoulder straps, a padded hip belt, and an adjustable back system, ensuring comfort for both the child and the wearer during extended hikes.
Safety Features: It comes with a 5-point safety harness to secure your child, providing peace of mind during your outdoor adventures.
Adjustable Seat Height: The carrier offers multiple height adjustment options for the seat, allowing it to grow with your child, which is great for long-term use.
Sun and Rain Protection: It includes a built-in sunroof and a detachable rain cover, ensuring protection from the elements for your child. (These must be purchased separately).
Ventilation: It's designed with a mesh back panel that promotes air circulation, keeping you and your child cooler on warm days.
Cons:
Price: Deuter products tend to be on the higher end of the price spectrum, so the Kid Comfort Active might be a bit costly compared to some other carriers.
Storage Space: The Kid Comfort Active has a sizeable storage compartment for all your essentials, but may not be suitable for full day hikes.
Learning Curve: Some users may find that adjusting the carrier to fit properly and using all its features effectively can take a bit of time and practice.
Limited Child Viewing: The design doesn't offer the same level of visibility to the child compared to carriers with front-facing options.
Storage Compartment Accessibility: While the carrier has ample storage space, accessing items from the storage compartment while the child is in the carrier can be a bit challenging.
